The Ministry of Education of Brazil received representatives of UNESCO IESALC
In preparation for the follow-up meeting of the III Regional Conference on Higher Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (CRES) 2018, called CRES+5, the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), of Brazil, received on Monday, January 29 and Tuesday, January 30, representatives of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC).
The director of UNESCO IESALC, Francesc Pedró, accompanied by Giulia Barão, specialist in Latin American and Caribbean Cooperation, visited the International Convention Center (CICB), where CRES+5 will be held from March 13 to 15. Accompanying the visit were the Secretary of Higher Education of the MEC, Denise Carvalho; the Director of International Relations of Capes, Rui Oppermann; and the Coordinator of the Education Sector (UNESCO Brazil), Rebeca Otero; as well as technical staff of the Ministry of Education.
Pedró celebrated the milestone of more than 1,000 registered participants in the conference and highlighted the excellence of the chosen venue, which contributes to give even more prestige to the conference. He also emphasized the importance of CRES+5 as a regional framework for higher education in the decade from 2018 to 2028. “It will be a unique opportunity to assess the road travelled and prefigure the higher education agenda for the coming years. It will also be the long-awaited face-to-face meeting after the pandemic of COVID-19.”
Pedró also pointed out that CRES+5 is a firm commitment to multilateralism and the necessary strengthening of academic, scientific and technological cooperation among the countries of the region.
On the first day of his visit to the federal capital, Francesc Pedró also participated in Colloquium 1 of the National Conference on Education (CONAE) of the University of Brasilia (UnB), where he discussed the theme “The educational challenges of the United States and Argentina in dialogue with Brazil: reimagining the Americas”. On Tuesday, UNESCO IESALC’s agenda in Brasilia continued with meetings at the headquarters of Capes and MEC.
CRES+5
The follow-up meeting of the III Regional Conference on Higher Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (CRES) 2018, called CRES+5, is organized by the Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Secretariat for Higher Education (SESU) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), and UNESCO IESALC.
The target audience of the Conference is confirmed by rectors, directors, academics, workers, students, higher education networks, associations and professionals, research centers, unions, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations and all those interested in higher education in the region.
As part of the preparatory activities for the follow-up meeting of CRES+5, different instances of open and participatory debate were organized in the region as part of the process of methodological construction of the event. Throughout 2023, face-to-face meetings were held in Córdoba (Argentina); Puebla (Mexico); and Asunción (Paraguay). In addition, preparatory virtual public consultations were held to discuss and gather information on the 12 Thematic Axes of CRES+5, as well as to contribute to the organization of the Conference. The fourth preparatory meeting will be held in Havana on February 7 and 8, 2024 within the framework of the Universidad 2024 Congress.
CRES – the Third Regional Conference on Higher Education (CRES 2018), held in Cordoba (Argentina) in June 2018, adopted a Declaration and Action Plan 2018 – 2028 and, at the same time, committed to hold a follow-up meeting five years later (CRES+5) to promote a participatory process to highlight progress made, as well as remaining challenges and emerging issues, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. CRES+5 will be an opportunity to analyze the achievements of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean and, at the same time, establish priorities for the next Regional Conference on Higher Education in 2028.
