On 1 March, the president of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Luis A. Ferrao, and the director of capacity development of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), Yuma Inzolia -on behalf of its director, Francesc Pedró-, signed an inter-institutional agreement to promote and strengthen education and human development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The UPR and UNESCO IESALC agreed to exchange information in order to carry out joint activities and maintain a framework for their follow-up. All this under the premise of joining efforts and enhancing synergies, which will result in the tangible development of the region.
To this end, they undertook to develop and promote: strategic alliances, training programmes to strengthen the capacities and competencies of the members of higher education institutions, scientific events and research and technical assistance to expand the offer of distance education, among other cooperation activities.
An important aspect will be to promote online courses and seminars to reduce gaps and meet the competence development needs of teachers, authorities and technical staff, including the strengthening of the university’s distance education model.
The institutions will also promote the development of training programmes for governing bodies, technical teams and faculty in order to strengthen teaching and learning models that enhance sustainability, digital transformation and university entrepreneurship.
This agreement will promote regional cooperation and integration and enhance capacities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, through the participation of higher education institutions, as fundamental hinges between academia and society for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
