UNESCO IESALC’s participation in #WHEC2022 | Round Table: Achieving gender equality in and through higher education

Within the framework of the UNESCO World Higher Education Conference 2022, UNESCO IESALC will take part in the Round Table: Achieving gender equality in and through higher education with Times Higher Education (THE) at 11:15-12:45 (Spain time) on May 20, 2022.
Supporting gender equality in and through education, including higher education, is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 5: gender equality and women’s empowerment. Since the adoption of the Agenda 2030, significant progress has been made to secure women’s access to and success in higher education, including better policies, but there is still room for improvement.
Two joint reports by UNESCO IESALC and THE aim to shine some light into this topic. Through a literature review, case studies and novel data analysis from hundreds of universities worldwide, evidence is presented on the activities that universities undertake within their teaching, research, engagement and management areas to promote gender equality.
This panel brings together a gender expert, and two university leaders to further discuss the opportunities and barriers universities face in the path to achieve gender equality and will explore ways to improve universities’ contribution to SDG 5 in the forthcoming years.

Gloria Bonder is the Director of the Department of Gender, Society and Policies of FLACSO, the Latin American Social Sciences Faculty, in Argentina.
Ricardo Villanueva Lomeli is the rector (president) of the Guadalajara University in Mexico since 2019.
Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri is President of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University) in India.
